1960's & 1970's

The Beginning

1963-64:

The 1st coach was Lee Smith and the 1st team consisted of: Dennis Smythe, Thomas Briggs, Fred Adams, Anthony Chiesa, Brian Tinsley, James Ward, and Donald Boswell.

 

1964-65:

The head coach was Jessie Smith and the team consisted of: R. Adams, Bruce Reitz, Donald Boswell, P. Mohai, Dennis Smythe, and James Ward. The team record was 0-8.

 

1965-66:

The head coach was Robert Gillinger and the roster expanded to include 18 runners. The team record was 1-8 with the first program win coming against Washington Twp. 25-31.

 

1966-67:

1967-68:

1968-69:

The head coach was again Jessie Smith and the team consisted of Ed Cox, James English, M. Hoover, R. Creadon, Glenn Eppinger, R. Wiltsee, M. Banks, Jim Fulton, Steve Lorang, Jim Henderson, and K. Davis.

 

1969-70:

The head coach was Robert Scholl and the team consisted of Jim Henderson, Mike Hudson, Glenn Eppinger, Mike Wilkinson, Mike Hudson, Mark Banks, and Bob DeBellis. The team record was 2-10.

 

1970-71:

The team had a 1-12 record and consisted of Dennis Biddick, Mark Breza, Lyle Haynes, Roy Hunt, Robert Hussa, Gyle McCollam, and Michael Wilkinson.

 

1971-72:

The head coach was Arthur Montgomery. William Sullivan set the home course record of 13:40 for 2 miles.

 

1972-73:

The head coach was Arthur Montgomery and the team record was 3-11. The team consisted of: Ed Eisler, Lee Comninos, George Wilkinson, Kenneth Youst, Lawrence Moore, Gary Hill, and Paul Zimmerman. Ed Eisler broke the home course record by running 13:33. William Bauer placed 8th in the Gloucester County Freshmen Meet.

 

1973-74:

The new head coach was Larry "B" Beversluis. The team record improved to 4-9. Larry Moore set the WDHS course record of 16:06.9 for 3 miles. He also was a medal winner at the SJTCA Open and Gloucester County Championships. Matt Moore won medals at the Gloucester County Freshmen Meet and South Jersey Freshmen Meet. Varsity runners included: Larry Moore, Arthur Simpson, Michael Almond, James Piltz, Donald Baumann, Paul Zimmerman, and Matt Moore.

 

1974-75:

The team finished with a 2-11 record. John Rumaker won the Gloucester County Freshmen Meet. Frank Jeannette and Bob Franke also medaled in the race. All 3 also medaled in the Olympic Conference Meet.

 

1975-76:

The team finished the season with a 4-9 record. Jim Klein set the team record on the new WDHS 3 mile course of 17:09. Fred McColl and Ozzie Vergara won medals in the Gloucester County Freshmen Meet. Fred also won medals in the Olympic Conference and South Jersey Freshmen Meets.

 

1976-77:

The team completed its second winning season with a 7-6 record. Matt Moore set the new team record on the home course of 16:56. Chris Moore placed 4th in the Gloucester County Freshmen Meet, 8th in the Olympic Conference Freshmen Meet, and 30th in the South Jersey Freshmen Meet.

 

1977-78:

The team record was 3-12. David Jackson placed 6th in the Gloucester County Freshmen Meet. For the 1st time ever, the team had 2 female participants: Sharon DiNardo and Debbie Huber.

 

1978-79:

The team matched the best record in school history finishing 9-6. A new 5000 meter course was constructed and the best WDHS time was 16:46 by John Meddings. Jack Dolan placed 2nd in the Olympic Conference Freshmen Meet, 3rd in the Gloucester County Freshmen Meet, and 16th in the South Jersey Freshmen Meet. In the Gloucester County Varsity Race, Paul Gliatto and Chris Moore placed 12th and 14th respectively.

 

1979-80:

The team record was 3-12. Paul Gliatto became the first All-Conference runner from WDHS. He also placed 13th in the Group 3 South Jersey Sectional race and set the new WDHS record of 16:34. Jamie and Jane Moore won medals in the girls Gloucester County Freshmen Meet placing 3rd and 10th respectively.
