Welcome to West Deptford Family and Consumer Sciences

Main Objective of the Classes:

Family and Consumer Science has, as its central focus, preparing individuals to become contributing members of a family structure, the community and society in general. What we want students to be able to do is to:

    Communicate

    Problem Solve

Work as a member of a team

    Decision Make

    Critically think

and most of all...... not to starve once they leave you!

Students are NOT penalized for burning food, food that doesn't turn out as planned, or setting "things" on fire. They are here to learn from their mistakes and understand how they could fix it.

Each Lesson:

On Classroom for each chapter lesson, students will have access to:

    Vocabulary

    Academic Notes aka Study Guides

    Slide Presentation

   Worksheets completed in Kami

All of these can be used to study for the chapter or unit quiz.

Graded on:

The breakdown of grading:

    Assessments - 30%

    Classwork - 20%

    Labs & Projects - 50%

Labs: Grading with be done myself, student self-                      assessment, and team assessment

Rules:

Because of the amount of movement in the class, the following are a list of the most important rules on a daily basis:

Sign out when leaving the room

    No talking while others are

Please raise hand and be courteous

    No phones unless directed

Laptops in use only when directed

Eating in class only on a lab day

Students have complied a comprehensive list of what they would like to see of their classmates. They hang in each kitchen.

Emergency Procedures:

(iloveyouguys.org)

   Fire Evacuation

   Lock down

Shelter in place

   Reunification

 Empowerment:

If we want students to be creative, self-directed learners, we need to go beyond student engagement and into empowerment. They need to own the learning. In class we will work on these 10 ways for students to take responsibility for their learning:

1. Don’t make all the decisions

Encourage students to make decisions about how they                       learn best.

2. Don’t play guess what’s in my head

Ask open-ended questions, with plenty of possible answers which lead to further questions.

3. Talk less

Minimize standing out front and talking at them.

4. Model behaviors and attitudes that promote learning.

Talk about my own learning.

5. Ask for feedback

Get students to write down what they learned, whether they enjoyed a particular learning experience, what helped their learning, what hindered their learning and what might help them next time.

6. Test less

Record student thinking and track development over time.

7. Encourage goal setting and reflection.

Help students to define goals for their learning.

8. Don’t over plan.

If I know exactly where the lesson is leading and what I want the kids to think, then I’m controlling the learning.

9. Focus on learning, not work.

Make sure I and my students know the reason for every              learning experience.

10. Organize student led conferences

The student talks about her/his strengths and weaknesses, how her/his learning has progressed and areas for improvement. She/he can share the process and the product of her learning.

Absent:

If a student is absent, they must speak to me about any make up work the day they returnYou will have only as many days as you were out to submit the assigned work.  I am available after school to discuss assignments missed.  Please see me privately to discuss your assignments. Otherwise, there will be no opportunity to make up assignments not turned in on time.

Extra Credit:

Extra Credit is given often. It is up to the individual student to take advantage of it. I encourage them to "bank it" for emergencies:

    Breakouts

    Puzzles

    Home cooking

    Videos

    Extra credit du jour
