1/2 COURT BASKETBALL RULES

BASKETBALL SKILLS:

http://www.youth-basketball-tips.com/

RULES:

1.     “CHECK” BALL AT START OF GAME AND AFTER EACH POINT IS SCORED

2.     IF BALL CHANGES HANDS, TEAM GAINING POSSESSION MUST TAKE BALL UP TO MID-COURT.

3.     AFTER ANY FOUL, VIOLATION, OR OUT OF BOUNDS BALL, OPPOSING TEAM CHECKS THE BALL AT MID-COURT

4.  TIED BALL – A BALL THAT IS BEING ‘HELD’ BY TWO OPPOSING PLAYERS FOR EVEN A SECOND IS CONSIDERED OF TIED BALL.  JUMP BALL BETWEEN TWO OPPOSING PLAYERS AT THE FOUL LINE.

FOULS AND VIOLATIONS

1.     BALL OR FEET OUT OF BOUNDS

2.     DISCONTINUED DRIBBLE

3.     TRAVELING

4.     3 SECONDS IN THE LANE (TIME COUNTS WHEN BALL IS BEING HELD, PASSED, OR DRIBBLED BY THE TEAM IN POSSESSION.  ONCE THE BALL IS SHOT TIME STOPS.)

5.     MORE THAN 5 SECONDS UNABLE TO MOVE THE BALL

6.     PERSONAL CONTACT WITH THE BALL HANDLER

*  IF YOU CALL YOUR OWN FOULS AND THE FOULS OF YOUR TEAMMATES, YOU WILL HAVE FEWER ARGUMENTS AND YOU TEAMMATES WILL LEARN THE GAME FASTER.

TECHNIQUE

1.     SHOOT FIRST, PASS SECOND, DRIBBLE THIRD

2.     SOFT HANDS

3.     KEEP CHEST UP SO EYES CAN SCAN

4.     NO SOFT, HIGH PASSES; TOO EASY TO INTERCEPT

5.     MAN TO MAN OR ZONE DEFENSE – ALWAYS STAY BETWEEN PLAYER WITH THE BALL AND THE BASKET.  STAY LOW WITH ARMS UP TO INTERCEPT.  NEVER ALLOW SOMEONE A CLEAR SHOT AT THE BASKET.

6.     OFFENSE – RECEIVE BALL AND GET RID OF IT.  THE LONGER YOU HOLD OR DRIBBLE, THE MORE THE DEFENSE WILL BE ABLE TO COVER YOU.  WHEN NOT IN POSSESSION OF THE BALL, MOVE INTO A FREE SPACE TO RECEIVE A PASS.  CUT TO THE BALL.  DO NOT STAND STILL!

7.     IF THERE IS AN EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD SHOOTER ON THE OPPOSING TEAM PUT SOMEONE FAST AND AGGRESSIVE ON HIM/HER.  IF USING A ZONE DEFENSE, KEEP HIM/HER OUTSIDE.

OTHER

SUBSTITUTION- EQUAL.  NO ONE CAN SUB A 2ND TIME UNTIL EVERY PLAYER HAS SUBBED AT LEAST ONCE.

IF YOU ARE A PLAYER WITH EXPERIENCE, YOU SHOULD BE HELPING OTHERS.
